WXDU's Mission
WXDU, as a member of the Duke University Union, exists to inform, educate, and entertain both the students of Duke University and the surrounding community of Durham through quality progressive alternative radio programming. WXDU seeks to give its staff the freedom to pursue their personal aesthetic within the framework of a cohesive format. WXDU aims to provide the listener with an alternative viewpoint untainted by commercial interests. WXDU resolves to maintain good relations with the music industry without compromising its integrity and nationally recognized commitment to quality programming. WXDU resolves to remain a laboratory where all members are free to make and learn from their mistakes.

One of the First Openly Gay Hardcore Singers

Texas sprouted one of the weirdest hardcore scenes in the 80s with the Dicks, MDC, Big Boys, Really Red, and Butthole Surfers.

Gary Floyd of the Dicks was one of the biggest characters in a very wild scene. The Butthole Surfers even wrote a song about him Gary Floyd.

Floyd often taunted his audience by dressing in drag, inviting rowdy audience members to suck his dick, and sometimes pulling chocolate frosting from his underwear. Thier songs Saturday Night at the Bookstore and Off-Duty Sailor were blistering hardcore songs dealing with issues of homophobia way before others jumped on board.

Spitboy - the leaders of female anarchy!!!

Though not a riot grrl band, their legendary aggressive attack on patriarchy and gender roles makes San Franscico's Spitboy amazing.
