* Steve Gunn Mr. Franklin Boerum Palace Three Lobed "prodigous talent for fusing traditional American song structures with raga influence," sez the label. Great steel guitar work from guest Marc Orleans.
* Mance Lipscomb Ain't It Hard The Best of Mance Lipscomb Arhoolie 1960s recordings from a SE Texas songster who play it all: "ballads, reels, breakdowns, pop songs, children's songs, spirituals, waltzes, foxtrots, one-steps, two-steps, ballin' the jack, heel-and-toe polka, the cakewalk, the Charleston, the buzzard lope, slow drag, hucklebuck, and blues." He played what the audience wanted, in short, on weekend nights. Worked as a sharecropper by day--cotton & corn. His name is short for "emancipation." Cool.
* Rumel Fuentes Walk-out en Crystal City Corridos of the Chicano Movement Arhoolie Early 70s SW Texas singer. Great protest songs of all sorts. This one documents 1968-69 student walkout at a high school where there was much inequity, including the straw that broke the camel's back: all cheerleaders selected except one were white.
